Thanks to everyone that responded. It took a while to wade through and follow up. Based on the ideas sent in to this forum, we bought a Pentax WG-1 camera with a remote control and a 5m painters pole from the local hard ware. Using an old tripod head and a few screws and duct tape we attached camera to pole and took it to the field. Plus a couple of painted wooden rulers for scale.
The results were OK, not great for detailed analysis but good enough to have 5 or 6 photographs to use as a back drop to an over view of the outcrop. If anyone wants a copy email me.
It has given us some ideas and we are going for a longer pole and a better camera with more ground control. But the first pass was certainly usable.
