BBC news at 10 tonight seemed shocked to discover that there are
between-Trust differences and between-day differences in availability
of ICU/HDU beds for patients requiring them
I can't see why they should be at all surprised, as current policies
seem to require a full 100% utilisation of each & every resource -
having a 'safety net' of unoccupied (but fully-staffed) beds thus
becomes anathema and characterised as "waste". If there are spare
beds but no staffing, the Trust gets vilified for failing to support
them, so it's always a "no win" scenario . . .
