Dear Ken,
thanks for your interesting comment. I am sorry to hear that you seem to have made bad experience with wikipedia.
I understand your point, but question if this is the right discussion.
I agree that wikipedia is from a scientific perspective not the right medium and also in many cases not reliable source for the public.
Personally, I don't mind if Wikipedia promotes design management or any other medium. However let me explain why I think that wikipedia is the right medium for promoting design management (in this case).
Objective (mainly for businesses and students)
- To explain the basics of design management to raise interest to those who are not yet familiar with it
- To communicate the scope and impact of design management without doing an in-depth literature review
Why wikipedia over a journal article
- Reach a larger audience that is not yet familiar with design or design management and would not look into scientific journals to find a definition on design management
- High visibility in search engines (top1 ranking) and therefore best position to promote the topic
- Easy to keep up to date, if new debates emerge
- Easy to link to other disciplines and themes
- Beside specialized books/articles and the design dictionary currently the only extensive definition of design management
Looking at the reasons for using wikipedia with the glasses of a scientist/researcher is very limited. Call it ambitious or over-motivated but I think that this is a great tool make more people interested in design management, to the benefit of all of us.
Best regards,
Stenlo
