Cine-Aesthetics: New Directions in Film and Philosophy is a new book series seeking to explore encounters between the discipline of cinema studies and the practice of philosophy. How does the discipline of film studies encounter philosophy? How do philosophers extend their thought to the study of cinema? In turn, how do these contacts impact the way we practice film studies and how we imagine philosophy? The books in this series, moving beyond other approaches that use film to illustrate philosophy, will probe the question of the relationship between the institutions of Film Studies and Philosophy by setting into motion the encounter between the aesthetics, history, and theories of cinema and the creation of philosophical concepts. The editors seek innovative and lively studies that probe what the interdisciplinary contact between film and philosophy means to both the practice of film study and the creation of philosophical meaning.
Possible topics for books in the series - which may take the shape of single-author monographs or multi-author collections -include:
* How do we practice film history and write about film style in a philosophical voice?
* The philosophical import of film poetics and aesthetics
* The ethical ramifications of film practice and spectatorship
* Points of contact between the practice of film directors and the philosophical imagination
* Relationships between film performance and philosophy
* Film technology and philosophy
* Film's intervention in the history of ideas
* How contemporary arguments and debates in philosophy are impacted by film's transformations into new mediums
* Other topics are imaginable and welcome.
Interested authors should submit proposals of no more than five pages, together with a brief biographical paragraph, to [log in to unmask] A sample chapter from the proposed book may be solicited by the editors after receipt of the initial proposal.
