Dear Christian, Megan and all,
Just a note to let you know that in 2003 I traslated into Spanish an
updated version of Davis & Payne´s 1992 paper under their supervision,
which included some modifications to their methods. It was published
as:
Davis S. & S. Payne 2003. 101 modos de tratar un erizo muerto: notas
sobre la preparación de esqueletos desarticulados para uso
zooarqueológico (translated by M. Mondini). Archaeofauna,
International Journal of Archaeozoology  12:203-211.
I could send a copy to anybody interested.
As to the methods we are using at the LaZTA, you can find a summary at:
Damonte, V., L. Fraschina, J. Hierling, P. Lobbia, E. Marcotti, A.
Marozzi, M. Mohn, M. Mondini, A. S. Muñoz, L. Pereyra y A. Pretto,
2009. Protocolos y bases de datos en zooarqueología y tafonomía. El
caso del Laboratorio de Zooarqueología y Tafonomía de Zonas Áridas,
Argentina. Libro de Resúmenes: 13º Congreso de Antropología en
Colombia, p. 223. I Encuentro Latinoamericano de Zooarqueología,
Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá.
It can be found at Bone Commons or just follow the link at:
http://blogs.ffyh.unc.edu.ar/zooarqueologia/resultados/publicaciones/
As to burying carcasses, we´ve had very good results after a long
time, even with unfleshed ones, but it all depends on the type of soil
and the like. You can find interesting tips on the matter in ZOOARCH
archives.
All the best,
Mariana

>> Hi-  I am looking to start a reference collection for faunal analysis at our office.  We have several specimens in the freezer, but as we don't have a lab with any sort of ventilation or hood, boiling them (indoors at least) is out of the question.  Are there any good resources out there about different ways to deflesh and preserve bones for this type of collection?  We have a lot of land space so burial would be a great option, but how long does that take, do you need to take most of the flesh off of the bones before burial, etc?  Any tips or suggestions of references to look into would be very much appreciated.
