Hello Idil and Viveka,
Yes I would suggest Metropolis and also a few other movies that might be of interest to you:- Blade Runner, a movie made in 1982 by Ridley Scott and starring Rutger Hauer- 1984, based on a novel by George Orwell- Brazil, made in 1985 and directed by Terry Gilliam. Some time ago I used these films in a design theory course to incite thinking in students about designing and the impact of how decision-making and design thinking are used and the consequences of the choices that we make.
In terms of science fiction and design, the concept of 'design theory' is a little broader when you investigate these movies and their underlying messages. The atmosphere, the messages, all speak to design theory at one level or another.

> How about Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927)? It has a couple of pretty intense designer archetypes: Joh Fredersen, the architect/industrialist who designed and controls the city, and Rotwang, the disruptive inventor of the revolutionary robot Maria. Everything in the film communicates about design, lots to talk about.
