I agree with your analysis. At the macro level, it closely parallels similar analyses of advertising and public information campaigns. In Information Design, the most compelling data comes from before and after studies, with good data from baseline measurement compared to measurement after implementation. There are a few case histories in the literature. Also, there is some useful indicative data from areas where good information design practices have been institutionalised, either in a single organisation or by government regulation across an entire industry.
