I'm also working within the framework of interaction design as the design of mediated action, and I have made two sheets that can be used to structure data collection and/or analysis. They don't work that well for driving new design ideas though, in my own experience.
One sheet is for personas/user profiles and one is for scenarios. You can find them at http://www.ida.liu.se/~matar/tools.en.shtml
They take only a little of explaining to the students. I'm currently developing some examples on how to use them. I haven't published anything on them, but it could perhaps be worth a short paper.
