On the one hand:
The work on design and emotion is quite compelling and timely (see the
design and emotion society and their many proceedings and books). And the
work on fun and ludic activities is equally compelling and timely.
On the other hand:
Do not equate these with happiness, let alone ethics.
For these, I recommend the work being done in *Positive Psychology* a
movement started by *Marty Seligman* and and *Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi*.
Wikipedia has surprisingly good treatments (and references) for all the
terms I have surrounded by * marks.
HOWEVER, none of the people in this movement relate their work directly to
design (although you can read the need for design all over their writings).
The relationship to ethics is more explicit and a number of economists and
even countries have started to be more concerned with happiness (Gross
happiness measures of a country) then with traditional economic measures
such as productivity and spending.
I could be wrong in that there are people directly relating the work in
positive psychology and/or happiness to design, and if so, that would be
wonderful -- I'd like to see the references. But so far, i have not
encountered any.
