medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The context is a series of depictions of saints of March in the order celebrated by the Serbian Orthodox Church in the early fourteenth century. At Gračanica many of saints depicted have had their faces disfigured. Such disfigurement is not uncommon in areas that for a long while were under Islamic rule. It is not clear why some figures escaped maltreatment in this fashion (many of the disfured images are in places that are harder to reach) -- possibly in their cases there was disfigurement as well but of a lighter nature and now concealed by restoration work.
The saint in question is the apostle Aristobulus (one of the 70; in the Roman church these are called disciples, not apostles). The one next to him, likewise disfigured, is bishop Alexander of Rome (i.e. pope St. Alexander I):
