medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am trying to identify the figure depicted in a late (post 16th c.)
painting in Ravenna. Around the medallion enclosing the figure is the
inscription
S. ANTONIVS ...ATAVINVS (at the top) and XIII . IV.MII . I.B.R. (at the
bottom)
At the end of the break, just before ATAVINVS, is the slightly angled
stroke of what could be an M, though the verticals of the M at the
bottom of the roundel are more nearly vertical.
Could one of you with more hagiographic knowledge and better Latin than
I have tell me what I should be finding out from this inscription?
Many thanks!
Genevra
