This excellent initiative has my full support. However, please reply to Naomi Givens and not me.

Volunteer epidemiologist wanted to help develop a statistical review process which will provide medical journalists with a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of scientific papers prior to writing of articles for the mainstream media.
The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and the Science Media Centre (SMC) are creating a network of volunteer statisticians to review embargoed papers and press releases for their strengths and weakness before they appear as stories in the lay media. These reviews would be provided to medical journalists so that they are better informed before they write their articles. The papers would be medical in nature and would cover both clinical trial and epidemiology studies.
We are at the stage of outlining the process and planning a pilot in September/October. We would like an epidemiologist both to help both in the development of this process and also to as a contact for a network of epidemiologists when the service gets started. We would expect this role to require a couple of hours a week over the next few months, diminishing once the service is up and running.
Please contact [log in to unmask] if you would like further information.
Thanks,
Naomi Givens and Anna Larbalestier
