Thanks Teresa - that's really informative - others have also suggested the UK Web Archive at the BL so I'll definitely be in touch with them - sounds highly suitable for local government repositories.

Subject: Re: archiving blogs
Hi
Some general information and a specific possible action for Kath at the end!
We set up a joint Web Archive in 2005 with the British Library which
includes a number of blogs. The BL collect the actual websites and
provide technical know how and infrastructure. We provide the
nominations and help get copyright clearance. We also provide links from
our website to promote access to this important resource by users. Our
Web Collection is branded as 'Women's Issues'' / The Women's Library
Collections and can be seen here: www.webarchive.org.uk/women
Our Collecting Policy for our BL Web Archive is similar to our Printed
Collections policy and will be included in our revised Collection
Development Policy later this year.
We collect sites by or about women as groups or individuals in the UK.
We seek to be representative of a broad range of interests and activities.
As TWL we have a particular interest in women campaigning for women i.e.
feminism. This is the explicit collecting interest of our physical
archives but as with our Printed Collections the Web Archive seeks to
represent broader interests of women in the UK.
A couple of other joint web archives now exist at BL, one is the Quakers
( a really lovely example). Hampshire County Record Office were also
setting one up (not sure how this is going - Heather?!).
These Joint Collections are part of the BL Special Collections
http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ukwa/collection Heather Needham and I wrote
an article for ARC about this last year - I think it was the June issue
2010.
The BL try to have 50+ websites archived in a Collection before they
post it up on the site - I know they were trying to get more LGBT
websites last year for a collection, but it appears they don't have
enough successful nominations yet.
The nomination is just part of the story - websites still have to have
copyright permission granted before the BL can archive them. So fewer
sites are archived than are identified. Hence BL's interest in running
joint collecting projects with archivists who can help gain permissions.
If you want to establish a joint web archive you must be prepared to put
the time in. We have a Librarian and a Library Assistant who dedicate
some time to this on a weekly/monthly basis to follow up nominations
with a personal 'ask' for copyright permission. We advertise our
collecting through our public events and active marketing (facebook,
twit, articles, feminist networks etc). We also have regular volunteer
projects to research new sites to be added to our 'shopping list'. This
Collection is not something that we leave to the BL but rather something
that is an active collection requiring dedicated time from us.
This approach will not suit all archive offices, but for us it has
worked very well.
We've recently passed the 300 websites archived which is a major
achievement and not something we could have achieved on our own. We will
have to review how this collection develops in the future - including
our relationship with the BL, but to date it has been an appropriate and
successful collaboration
Alternatively you can nominate one-off suggestions to the BL - Anyone
can nominate a UK website to be archived. This can be a nomination to a
Special Collection or towards one of the BL subject strands see
http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ukwa/browse/ . Websites can be nominated
for more than one category.
Nominations can be made here:
http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ukwa/info/nominate It is even easier if the
website owner nominates the site and gives permission at the same time.
Kath: As an example could nominate her councillor for the Women's Issues
site (cheeky of me I know!) AND for the Subject: Government, Law &
Politics </ukwa/subject/85/page/1>/ Political Parties
</ukwa/subject/89/page/1> / where you find a lot of individual MPs and
Councillors as well as a section re Political Parties.
Hope this helps!
