Dear Mailbase
I would be interested to know how other fellow blood science laboratories in the UK, with combined specimen receptions, record electronically the type of specimen received when there are multiple specimen types. For example, if you receive a request for a full blood count, clotting screen and U&E, with EDTA, citrate and clotted samples, what would you record the sample type as? We currently use CliniSys WinPath as our LIMS and record the sample type as blood. However, if we say that a particular analyte can only be analysed in serum, there is no way of determining whether a serum or lithium heparin sample was originally sent following aliquoting, after the primary sample has been discarded.
I would be interested to hear from other laboratories with combined specimen reception, particularly from those who use WinPath, whether they have found a solution to this problem. I will collate any responses and post a summary.
Many thanks
