A 46 year old woman visited her Family Doctor. The clinical details on the request form were ‘Menopausal? Able to stop progesterone only pill?’.
Serum results were as follows:
FSH 21.9 U/L (follicular phase 2.5 -12)

“Perimenopausal FSH but future ovulatory cycles cannot be excluded. RCOG guidance:FSH >30 IU/l on two occasions 1 or 2 months apart is suggestive of ovarian failure & woman <50 years should then continue with contraception for further two years.”
