well as the wider global research community. It will comprise
academic articles that address theory, research and practical issues related
to the current entrepreneurial principles of cultural and
creative industries ranging from socio-economical research, to the
cultural dimensions of creativity and innovation, and the
entrepreneurial dimension of Cultural and Creative Industries.

Dates: 20-22 January 2012

Deadline for *next round* of abstract: 7 July 2011

We are pleased to host the Design Conference this year at the University of
California, Los Angeles, USA. Los Angeles is a world center of
entertainment, arts, design and media. Its cultural and economic diversity,
and landmarks of expansion and development over the last century make Los
Angeles an ideal place to discuss the dimensions of design theory and
practice.

The Design Conference is a place to explore the meaning and purpose of
‘design’, as well as speaking in grounded ways about the task of design and
the use of designed artifacts and processes. The conference is a
cross-disciplinary forum that brings together researchers, teachers and
practitioners to discuss the nature and future of design. In professional
and disciplinary terms, the conference traverses a broad sweep to construct
a dialogue that encompasses an expansive array of disciplinary perspectives
and practices. The highly inclusive format provides conference delegates
with significant opportunities to connect with people from shared fields and
disciplines and with those from vastly different specializations. The
resulting conversations provide ample occasions for mutual learning, weaving
between the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, and
market pragmatics and social idealism.

*Diagrams* is an international interdisciplinary conference series, covering
all aspects of research on the theory and application of diagrams. In 2012
will be held at the University of Kent overlooking the history city of
Canterbury in the UK.

Diagrams is the only conference series that provides a united forum for all
areas that are concerned with the study of diagrams, including architecture,
artificial intelligence, cartography, cognitive science, computer science,
education, graphic design, history of science, human-computer interaction,
linguistics, logic, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and software
modelling. The conference attracts a large number of researchers from
virtually all these related fields, positioning Diagrams as a major
international event in the area.

*A special issue of the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia: Cultures in
virtual worlds*
Guest-edited by Jeremy Hunsinger and Adrienne Massanari

Virtual worlds (VW) embody cultures, their artefacts, and their praxes;
these new and old spaces of imagination and transformation allow humans to
interact in spatial dimensions. Within these spaces, culture manifests with
the creation, representation, and circulation of meaningful experiences. But
virtual worlds are not novel in that regard, nor should we make the mistake
to assume that they are novel in themselves. Virtual experiences have been
around in some respect for hundreds of years, and virtual worlds based in
information technology have existed for at least 40 years. The current
generation of virtual worlds, with roots over four decades old in studies of
virtual reality, computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), sociology,
cultural studies, and related topics, provide for rich and occasionally
immersive environments where people become enculturated within the world
sometimes as richly as the rest of their everyday lives.

We seek research that encounters and investigates cultures in virtual worlds
in its plurality and in its richness. To that end, we invite papers covering
the breadth of the topic of cultures in and of virtual worlds.

Submission deadline: 1 August 2011

The DESIRE 2011 Doctoral Consortium will precede the 2nd Creativity and
Innovation in Design Conference and it will take place in Eindhoven, the
Netherland on the 18th of October 2011. The Doctoral Consortium will provide
a supportive atmosphere where PhD students can present their
research-in-progress for an open discussion, under the guidance of an
interdisciplinary panel of experienced researchers. The colloquium offers
students the valuable opportunity to receive feedback and perspectives from
recognized experts in the field, and to engage with fellow researchers. The
strongest candidates will be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete
proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed
research methodology. Preference will be given to applicants who have ample
time before thesis submission to incorporate feedback received at the
colloquium.

Sponsored by: WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment and The
International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics

Throughout history, many leading thinkers have been inspired by the
parallels between nature and human design, in mathematics, engineering and
other areas. Today, the huge increase in biological knowledge, developments
in design engineering systems, together with the growth in computer power
and developments in simulation modelling, have all made possible more
comprehensive studies of nature.

Scientists and engineers now have at their disposal a vast array of
relationships for materials, mechanisms and control. The resulting laws have
been painstakingly assembled by observation and analysis and span the cosmic
scale of space down to the molecular level of genetics. In particular, they
have made us aware of the rich diversity of the natural world around us.

It is these developments which have prompted the reconvening of this
international conference on Design and Nature. It is intended that the
meeting will bring together researchers from around the world working on a
variety of studies involving nature and their significance for modern
scientific thought and design.

With firm roots in the original Participatory Design focus on involving
people in the introduction of technology into their work, the theme of the
next PDC conference invites us to explore traditional fields of
participatory design as well as emerging areas, field, arenas and forms of
participation.
Skilled workers are still participating in design processes aiming at
developing tools for quality of working life, but designing for everyday
life poses new challenges for the way participation is practiced and
understood. Today we are designing engaging experiences not only through
participation but also for participation.

submit articles and other features for publication.

Interactions magazine is the mirror on the human-computer interaction
and interaction design communities and beyond. It is the multiplicities
of conversations, collaborations, relationships and new discoveries focused
on how and why we interact with the designed world of
technologies. Interactions magazine carries a special voice that lies
between practice and research with an emphasis on making accessible and
engaging HCI research in practitioner communities.

‘As a newly emergent and rapidly evolving field, the status of artistic
research is still hotly debated.

Until now there have only been limited publication channels making it
difficult to stay informed about the development of the many topics
pertinent to artistic research. With the arrival of JAR we now have an
online journal that focuses on artistic practice as research, and marries
the multi-media capabilities of the web to the peer-reviewing and scholarly
rigour of the academic journal.’

On behalf of the Design Research Society (DRS), is organising the Design
Research Society International Conference 2012 -DRS2012:Bangkok. The
conference will be held at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

This conference is open to research that deals with any aspect and
discipline of design. While DRS 2012:Bangkok does not have an exclusive
theme, the committee welcomes papers that address notions of ‘Re:Search:
uncertainty, contradiction and value’ in contemporary design research,
education and/or practice. Issues that might be addressed include:
creativity and the institutionalization of design methodologies; design
science; design in the academy and the so-called creative economy or
creative industry; sustainability versus commodification; criticality and
culture; conflicting definitions of design and designer in the contemporary
world; design and ethics; individuality, the disciplinary and social
contexts; exchange value and surplus value; and absolute values versus
relative values. These themes sit alongside the areas covered by the four DRS
Special Interest Groups - EKSiG (Special Interest Group on Experiential
Knowledge); SIGWELL (Special Interest Group on Health and Wellbeing); SiGPED
(Special Interest Group on Design Pedagogy); OPENSIG (Special Interest Group
for Objects, Practices, Experiences, Networks) which will be represented at
the conference in distinct strands chaired by the SiG conveners.
