medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Wickstrom <[log in to unmask]>
John, in the context of your long-standing expertise regarding the 12th c.
sources on St. Maur, could you hazard a guess as to why an episode in his life
might have been chosen (presumably by Suger) for depiction in a window in the
new St. Denis choir?
or, is Maur just "incidental" here --the real subject being St. Benny's
life?
> This depiction of Maur rescuing Placid seems quite unusual....
> Also the presence of the devil in this scene is odd. The description of the
scene in the Flicker image suggests that the devil is from another window, yet
Benedict seems to look directly at the devil. raising his hand d as if to ward
him off; moreover the image of the devil seems integrated into the various
pieces of glass in that scene.
>Very curious.
looks to me that the panel here has been so mucked-about-with and "restored"
that nothing can be seen as uncurious.
but, i suppose all this has been dealt with in the scholarly literature on the
St. Denny glass... up with which i have not kept.
