Hi All,
In Bexley, since we upgraded SirsiDynix to Symphony in November 2009, use of the PN computers has updated the last activity field on the borrower record. I believe Lorensbergs had told us that this had been possible for some time with SIP2 but that LMS suppliers had been slow/reluctant to implement it.
This means that we now actually report active membership rather than borrowers to Cipfa, because there is no easy way of separating customers into borrowers only, computer users only, and those who do both.
Also, as with Westminster's original query, we still have this problem in other areas. As far as I'm aware, we have no way of easily finding out details of which library members use our online resources or only borrow e-books and e-audio; there is definitely no communication between Overdrive and Symphony, and the Overdrive set-up is governed by US data protection laws which prevent libraries from correlating the data on the two systems.
thanks,
Hugh

It strikes me that the easiest way would be to have interoperability
between the LMS and the booking system such that each time the customer
logged on with their barcode this updated a "last use of the library"
field, in a similar way as issuing a book to them would. Similarly, if
they were logging onto a library portal to visit e-resources.
And while I'm wishing...

Don't have an answer, but the same applies to users who signup only to
use the public PC's through the booking system - and as you say, such
users will also expire in the LMS as they are not 'updated on last use'.
Mind you, there is also the question of Barcode authentication of
eResources which never expires.
The whole concept of user activity based on physical loans seems to be
under question, and our ability to measure user activity across
disparate systems based on library membership hasn't caught up.
Unless the LMS databases can, via the authentication method, record the
disparate use, or data from the systems can be pooled and interrogated,
difficult so see an answer to this.

Here in Westminster we're concerned about losing memberships of people
who have signed up for our online resources, and who then don't use the
libraries for borrowing books. Lack of activity on the membership
database does mean that their memberships will be purged, but they won't
be aware of it since they continue to have access to online databases.
Have any authorities found a solution to this problem? I'm aware that
some libraries require customers to log on to their opacs before having
access to online goodies (a secure referring URL). Does this solve the
problem, and are there authorities who have implemented this solution
with Sirsi-Dynix Symphony?
Any information gratefully received, and I'll share it with the list.
