Hi Keith,
I am so happy to hear that "Doing engineering is not doing research just as doing design is not doing research." It is high time that more people stand to this position. Design is not research and we all should be very happy about that. Otherwise, the whole world will be enmeshed in on unarticulated, blurred entity.
Best wishes,
Lubomir

Dear Fil,
I think it is the same, but different systematization. Doing engineering is not doing research just as doing design is not doing research. We can talk about research assistants and mean that they are conducting the work of the lab/clinic/workshop/studio but not doing research. This doesn't stop them from assisting but if they start making research decisions (exceeding the protocols) then they are invading (entering) the realm of research. Of course we can ask them to do this which is some of what happens in the training (induction) process of being a PhD candidate.
cheers

Keith,
Being an engineer, I wouldn't know about the systematic nature, or
lack thereof, of clinical/workshop/studio. I wonder if it's just a
different systematization.
Cheers.
