Hi Nicolas, Miles
We, at IADE, Lisbon, have a masters program called Design de Produção.
It can not be translated as Production Design but should be translated
as Design of (for?) Production. The program has two branches: Design of
(for?) Industrial Production & Design of (for) Ambientes (difficult to
translate: used to be interiors but also encompasses installations outside).
Somehow we jumped over the industrial/product dilemma. The focus is on
the production in a way the designer oversees or collaboratively with
other professionals oversees and in fact designs a (for a) production
system. There are products which are industrially manufactured and
others not, but are produced and in that sense are products. Think, for
instance, in commercial interiors design.
We feel that the focus on production is more successful educationwise
than the focus on products.
The interesting part of it is that you use the word Design both as an
attribute of objects or as a designation for a profession without any
other word attached, people will think immediately about industrially
produced objects or professionals 'drawing' objects to be industrially
produced.
Best regards
