Lars,
My colleague Jon Koomey (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Stanford
University) has done some work comparing the energy use of different music
delivery methods in a report for Microsoft and Intel. Jewel cases figure
into it in a minor way, but there is a reference for a study on CD
packaging.

> Subject: Research on the design of the CD jewel box?
>
> Dear all,

> I am looking for studies on the design of the standard CD case (the 'jewel
> box'). I cannot find any using our online systems. Apparently Philips have

>
> In my view it may be one of worst designs ever, considering the number
> produced and the number of failures/breaks/damages, being difficult to open
> and other user problems.
>
> Does anyone on the list know of any research on it?
