Working with young offenders
CILIP South East - Crawley Library - 29 September 2011
Course description
A practical course on improving provision for young offenders and their families. This training is for people working in the cultural heritage sector, including libraries, museums and archives. The course will set the background in terms of who young offenders are and the kinds of experiences they have had. Using case studies, it will then explore good practice in meeting young offenders’ needs and identify ways to develop effective projects and programmes.
Key learning outcomes
• awareness of the background to offending, the experiences that young offenders and their families may have had
• understanding of the criminal justice system as it affects young people
• understanding the role that cultural heritage organisations can play, e.g. in motivating learning, supporting literacy, assisting in finding and using information
• sharing good practice, and building on that to develop personal and organisational action plans
Course leaders: Anne Harding and John Vincent
Anne is an independent trainer who specialises in effective provision for children and young people in libraries, museums and the education sector. John coordinates The Network, advocating the role of the cultural sector in social justice; disseminating information; and running practical training courses.
