Hi Sarah
I insist that it goes through our Special Needs Department. If they think the candidate could benefit from a Word Processor, because of say handwriting issues we will try to provide one. Of course 25% has to be more thoroughly supported. So far having this in place has led to a slight increase of use of WPs but not so significantly as to lead to problems. We have the use of a computer room for when there are more than 6 WPs. Any less and they sit in the Exams Hall with a laptop.
Strangely enough the 3 candidates for whom we have applied a WP and we want them to use one, have all refused and the transcripts take sometimes longer than the exam they have just sat.
Until I have been instructed otherwise or the college builds a room with 150 WP in Exam condition, I will not let any Tom, Dick or Harry nor Thomasina, Alice nor Harriet to have a WP without above mentioned evidence.
Hope this helps
Kind regards
Marjanne

Hi everyone
Can anyone advise the criteria you use within your centre for determining which students use a word processor in exams? Also, do you have the final say or is it the SLDD department?
The reason I ask is we seem to be having more and more requests each year and the only criteria in the JCQ book now is that it is has to be the candidate's normal way of working. When I phoned AQA yesterday for firm clarification, I was told that, ''well to be honest a word processor is everyone's normal way of working these days!!' They were very vague and said we just need to prioritise.
As we only have a limited amount of equipment that we can provide, I am keen to ensure that we have our own policy in place to ensure that we can justify why a student is using a word processor as opposed to another. If we don't we could be faced with the prospect of 1600+ students all requesting to use one as this is their normal way of working!
I know the time is going to come when exams are all done on screen but..
Many thanks
Sarah McLean
