medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Yes, but is the Daria figured in Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna really more likely to be the perhaps initially Moesian saint of 17. June's Nicander, Marcian, and Daria (whose cult in Italy seems not to be attested with certainty before the eleventh century) than the Roman martyr with Chrysanthus of 25. October (medievally, 29. November or 1. December)? The latter is attested in the "west" from the sixth century (Gregory of Tours; John of Monza) onward and is usually presumed to be the Daria figured in Ravenna's _capella arcivescovile_ (whose restored late fifth- or early sixth-century medallions also present Chrysanthus but not Nicander or Marcian).
