I would have thought that the particular research would be the referent, the writing the signifier, and the signified would be widely variable depending on the reader. The signs (i.e., the union of the writing and the understanding of each reader) would be in contention and that would partly explain the nature of the current conversations on this listserv.
Have I fallen into a deep, postmodern cognitive pit of some sort?
