Hi all,
I was just reading the advert for PhD fellowships
in the UK when I stumbled over the final
important sentence about who is eligible for the
fellowships. And it reminded me about the problem
I often face when applying to positions outside
my own country: does this mean I can apply or
not? Legal phrases are not always
self-explanatory. If you are not familiar with
that country's immigration laws and terminology,
you often spent too much time just to figure out
in the end that it was a waste of time. So, when
reading the following sentence, I understand,
that you can be a non-UK citizen, if you already
live there for quite some time. A grad student of
mine who is interested in applying would not be
eligible, because he is a German national (EU
nationality) who does not live in the UK? Am I
correct? I presume the phase "settled status"
would be equivalent to the US Green Card or the Canadian Landed Immigrant....
>EPSRC Award eligibility: Applicants must be UK
>nationals, or have settled status in the UK,
>meaning they have no restrictions on how long
>they can stay, and also have been 'ordinarily
>resident' in the UK for 3 years prior to the
>start of the award (not for the purposes of full time education).
I would appreciate, if the job proposals sent out
on this list could clarify this important issue in simple phrases.
Best wishes,
Jochen
P.S. This is just general comment I could have
made about most of the other job postings as well.
