Dear Lars,
In its inaugural issue 1.1 (March, 2009), Design and Culture published Will Straw's "In Memoriam: The Music CD and Its Ends." The abstract is available at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/berg/dgcj/2009/00000001/00000001/art00005
You're absolutely right--it died a relatively quick and well deserved death. . .

Subject: Research on the design of the CD jewel box?
Dear all,
I am looking for studies on the design of the standard CD case (the 'jewel box'). I cannot find any using our online systems. Apparently Philips have published their own "study": "The history of the CD - The 'Jewel Case'", but I cannot find it now. I presume, however, that the Philips study may lack somewhat in criticism.
In my view it may be one of worst designs ever, considering the number produced and the number of failures/breaks/damages, being difficult to open and other user problems.
Does anyone on the list know of any research on it?
Best Regards,
Lars
