find...Saint-Benoit sur Loire...

should you, Marjorie, or anyone else find themselves in Fleury again, you
might also take a peek at the "early gothic" (1190s?), column figured *north*
portal off of the nave

resent restoration work has revealed traces of the original polychromy.
the style of the sculptures is quite interesting, as is the iconography, which
mixes the ancient theme of a Majestas Domini surrounded by the four
evangelists,

writing and accompanied by their symbols

the lintel depicts the inventio of the relics of St. Bennie (at Cassino, was
it??)

and their translation to the abbey dedicated to him on the Loire and the
accompanying miracles

(not depicted is the bursting out of the winter countryside in blooming
flowers, which was apparently too much of a challenge for even this quite
accomplished sculptor.)
of great interest (well, to me at least) is the *unfinished*, c. 1130 lintel
which is now to be found on the reverse side of the lintel of the portal (and
therefore on the interior of the church), which i first saw a few shots of on
Emanuel Pierre's site, here:
http://www.art-roman.net/stbenoit/stbenoit5.htm
the unfinished side was discovered a few years ago during the course of the
restoration of the portal.
there should be some better, larger and more detailed shots of it somewhere on
the web, but i have been unable to find any.
