Perhaps it would be possible to find a mechanism whereby, after a certain number of postings (3? 4?) by the same person on the same topic, further messages on that topic could be transferred to a web site but would no longer be distributed by email. A single email announcing this could direct those who wished to continue the discussion to the web site, while everyone else could ignore it. Not sure if this is technically feasible, but it might help to keep all parties happy.
