In Retrospective Cohort Study, all the events - exposure, latent period, and
subsequent development of disease have already occurred in the past. We merely
collect the data now, and establish the risk of developing a disease if exposed
to a particular risk factor. Disease has already occurred. On the other hand, in
a Prospective Cohort Study, it is conducted by starting with two groups at the
current point, and following up in future for occurrence of disease, if any.
Disease has not yet occurred. Retro looks back to see how groups different in
terms of risk factors for the disease development, prospective follows the 2
groups (exposed and unexposed), to see who develops disease...both use 2 groups,
exposed and unexposed.
A retrospective case series is the description of a group of cases with a new or
unusual disease or treatment. Point is looking backward in time versus
prospective case series (following forward in time).

Subject: Retrospective studies: Difference between case series vs chart review
vs cohort study
Hello all,
I'm trying to determine the difference between the following:
Retrospective cohort study
Retrospective chart review
Retrospective case series
I'd be grateful if anyone could help distinguish between these designs
and if anyone knows of any tools to assist in the critical appraisal of
the chart review and case study designs.
Kind regards,
Michelle
