Dear colleagues,
Two queries to which somebody may have answers readily available.
Question 1 is what length of time should a child fast for fasting lipids?
This is a query passed to me by a colleague in a paediatric lab. They are
reviewing their protocols which currently state 12 hours fast except for
babies where they specify take bloods before the next feed. Also should the
time change (reduce) for diabetics. I have some published protocols for when
fasting or non-fasting lipids should be measured but not what duration of
fast.
Question 2 relates to drinking water as part of a fast pre fasting lipids or
glucose. We recommend drinking normal amounts of water during their fast but
I would like to get a reference to quote in support of this. Does anyone
have a reference to a journal paper or review supporting (or not)
consumption of water during a pre-blood test fast?
Any help would be appreciated.
best wishes.
