medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Andrew Larsen
> While we are on the subject of calendrics, I have a question I recently ran
into. I recall reading some years ago that English kings dated their reigns
not by the calendar year but by the anniversary of their coronation.... Does
anyone know of any work that addresses this issue?
i just came across this article on the Persée site which might be of some
interest:
Fazy Max. Note sur le style employé par Etienne de Tournai pour dater ses
actes. In: Bibliothèque de l'école des chartes. 1908, tome 69. pp. 169-184.
http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/bec_0373-6237_1908_num_69_1_448306
doesn't deal with royal charters, obviously, but with the system used
(including dating by regnal years, and therefore how they were fixed) by a
Bishop of Tournai.
