medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Chris Laning <[log in to unmask]>
> There is an obscure book on the subject, all copies of which appear to be in
the UK except one in the Bayerischen Staatsbibliotek: Die textilen
Byssus-Reliquien des Christlichen Abendlandes, aufbewahrt in den Kirchen zu
Köln, Aachen, Cornelimünster, Mainz and Prag. It's dated 1895 so I'm not
sure how good it is.
uhhhhmmmm.... Chris, in my limited experience, German/Austrian monographs of
that era --with some exceptions, obviously-- are quite *astonishing* pieces of
erudition.
from it's title, this one sounds like it might well be a Hit.
otOh, i can't find it under that title in WorldCat.
shucks, it's even "Currently Unavailable" on amazon.co.uk.
imagine that.
the author was a prolific fellow:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Johann_Joseph_Bock
illegible, but morebetter:
http://www.bautz.de/bbkl//b/bock_f_j_j.shtml
a WorldCat search on title+author yields 5 copies, worldwide, two in the U.K.,
at the Brit Lieberry and at the V&A.
the bad news is that this "book" is only 28 pages long.
the good news is that Indiana U. has his book on Grünewald.
>I'm sure I recall a more recent book (more of the coffee-table variety) but a
quick search doesn't turn it up.
well, offhand, i'd say, in this case, Age Before Beauty.
