This is a unique opportunity for a participatory design specialist to experience working in a cutting edge team on live service design projects where improving the user experience is a key design driver.

This post will be based within the User-Centred Healthcare Design (UCHD) project. The post is funded by the NIHR and is part of the South Yorkshire Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC-SY), which is a 5-year, £10m collaboration between Sheffield Hallam, the University of Sheffield and the South Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals Trust. The UCHD theme is led by:

Prof Andy Dearden (Sheffield Hallam University) - Contact: [log in to unmask]

Revd. Mark Cobb (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)

Professor Peter Wright (Newcastle University)

Dr Ade Adebajo (Barnsley District Hospital)

You will join a multi-disciplinary team of designers, researchers and healthcare professionals aiming to improve user-centred service design and delivery in the NHS. You will also work closely with NHS staff and users of NHS services who have a range of long-term conditions such as obesity, diabetes, stroke or chronic heart failure. Working with health practitioners, you will assist with running participatory design activities, developing new design approaches and supporting external teams of NHS staff, patients and third sector organisations who are applying user-centred methods to design services.

Knowledge and experience of user research, participatory design and service design is essential to the success of the project as is a willingness and ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare, IT and HCI specialists in order to transfer knowledge from research into NHS practice.

The person offered this post will be subject to an Enhanced criminal records check by the Criminal Records Bureau. A criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from working at Sheffield Hallam University but its relevance to the duties of the post will need to be assessed before the appointment is confirmed.

Non-EU Nationals please note
The University has a legal responsibility to ensure that all employees are entitled to live and work in the UK. Due to the current restrictions on the number of Tier 2 Certificates of Sponsorship available, it is unlikely that we would be able to obtain a Tier 2 Certificate of Sponsorship for this job. Therefore it is unlikely that we will be able to consider applications from candidates who require Tier 2 immigration status to work in the UK. You can check whether you would be eligible to work in the UK under the points based system by using the UKBA points calculator. For further information please visit the UK Border Agency website.

Closing Date: 20/05/2011 by 12 noon
Andy will be at CHI 2011 in Vancouver from 6th - 12th May
