........................................................................

On behalf of the SID Research Cell, I am thrilled to invite
submissions for SAMVAD:DIALOGUE 2011, an international seminar
organised by SID Research Cell, Faculty of Design, CEPT University
Ahmedabad.

The two day seminar is being organised as a pre-cursor to the workshop
being conducted for the students of the International Master of
Interior Architectural Design (IMIAD) coming from Stuttgart,
Edinburgh, Istanbul, Lugano, Lahti and Ahmedabad hosted by the Faculty
of Design, CEPT University. The seminar aims to offer a strong
theoretical background and provide a worthy take-off point for the
participants of the workshop.

The call for papers is reproduced below and may also be downloaded
from the website (http://www.cept.ac.in/samvad2011). Even though the
timeline is a little tight, do consider submitting an abstract. Do

Samvad : Dialogue

India is often quoted to be an assimilative culture with the only
homogenous character being plurality and diversity. It surely exists
simultaneously and quite comfortably in multiple time-periods, with
many contradictions, bringing with it an immensely rich and varied
fabric, a diversity that is integral to India. It has often in the
past shown its power to negotiate variety and differences in a
positive manner ably aided by its long history of the argumentative
and dialogic tradition transgressing gender, caste, economic,
political and religious divides, a process seen by Nobel Laureate
Amartya Sen as an integral part of the development of Indian thought
and ethos and an important factor for the correct reading of India’s
past. Dialogic learning as Wikipedia suggests is ‘the result of
egalitarian dialogue; in other words, the consequence of a dialogue in
which different people provide arguments based on validity claims and
not on power claims’.

If design and understanding of design in the Indian context is to
benefit from this diversity and plurality, it seems most useful to
continue in the spirited tradition of Samvad or dialogue. You are
invited.

THE IDEA OF DIALOGUE

Dialogue is shared exploration towards greater understanding,
connection, or possibility. The need for dialogue often defines the
existence of a boundary while the process of dialogue seeks to change
that very boundary. Apart from its use in negotiating boundaries,
dialogues also help to resolve conflicts, to build consensus, to
elevate understanding, to consolidate different perspectives, to push
accepted boundaries, to interrogate, to introspect, to inquire.

In its many forms (as arguments, conversations, debates, interrogation
and others), dialogues can also be seen as additive (implying a
positive engagement), subtractive (implying a negative engagement),
multiplicative (implying may voices towards a cumulative engagement)
and divisive (implying many voices towards a conflictive engagement).

IDEA OF DIALOGUE IN THE INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT

Craft / Technology / Architecture / Interior / Sustainability /
History / Theory / Practice / Past / Present / Transience / Permanence
/ Quality / Quantity / Global / Local / Desire / Need / Traditions /
Plurality / Simultaneity / Locus / Boundary/ Colour / Empty / Full /
Control / Security / Freedom / Natural / Artificial / Customs / Ritual
/ Material / Abstract / Identity / Universality / Modernity / ………… /
………… / ………… / ………… / ………… / ………… / ………… / ………… /

The interior environment can be read as a space which is created,
occupied and claimed by many things – both tangible like the walls,
roofs, windows and doors, furniture, objects, people and also
intangible like customs, behaviour, habits, norms, values, traditions,
and such. In that sense, the interior environment can be seen as the
resultant and the embodiment of a dialogue that is constantly
happening between all the things that create it and make it habitable
– it is a place for such dialogues to occur and at the same time, is
made by these very exchanges.

The dialogic method seems to be especially useful when there are many
voices and many, often varied, issues to negotiate. In that light we
see it as a useful mode to engage with all the complexity, variety and
richness offered by both the Indian context, the realm of the interior
environment and time we live in today.

The seminar sets forth to look at design and the interior environment
from the viewpoint of dialogues. Identifying key words (from the list
above, to which others maybe added if need be) that are relevant to
today’s time, the Indian context and the realm of the interior
environment, speakers will construct and present an understanding of
the interior as a resultant of the dialogue between them.

Seminar Structure:

The seminar will begin with two keynote dialogues which will present a
conceptual background to the idea of dialogues in general and within
design, in specific. Further sessions will be structured around the
following themes being the aims with which the dialogue is conceived
and presented.

Theme01 : INTERPRET : Infer : Inform

Theme02 : INTERROGATE : Investigate : Inquire : Inspect
