Hello,
First I want to acknowledge the gracious offers for various copies of the
DRS proceedings. Still, my understanding is that it is not possible for
others to access these papers. If that is the case, then while recognizing
and respecting the challenges of conference management, I just want to point
out that this is extremely problematic for junior scholars. Basically,
because these papers are inaccessible, they don't really count. At least in
the US and at my institution, if the publication cannot be accessed by a
review committee, it can't really be listed as a publication. So, it is hard
to justify the effort and expense of participating in such conferences when
you can't point to a publication after the fact and when they are not
indexed and accessible to other scholars.
Perhaps in the future, such conferences might not require papers, only
abstracts? Or perhaps there might be a way to partner with another
organization to hosts the papers after the fact?
If I am missing something here - if the papers are indexed and accessible to
other scholars - my apologies for this misunderstanding. If not, perhaps as
a community we can work together to reconsider the requirement of full
papers for conferences?
Regards,
Carl
