Tenure track or tenured faculty position in graphic design research

Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland – the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The goal of the Aalto University School of Art and Design is to be a dynamic, international school that promotes the development of creative fields, the regeneration of Finnish culture and artistic education and furthers innovation-based business that supports sustainable development.  The School cooperates actively with industry, the cultural sector and the surrounding society and forms networks with the best international universities and centers of expertise in order to realize its goals. The teaching and research of the School of Art and Design focus on design, media, art education, visual culture and audio-visual presentation. The Aalto University School of Art and Design has approximately 1900 students and 450 staff.


The Department of Media has extended application period for:

TENURE TRACK OR TENURED POSITION IN GRAPHIC DESIGN RESEARCH

 that can be filled at the levels of associate professor (tenured or non-tenured) or tenured professor. The position will begin during the academic year 2011-12.

Candidates who have already submitted their applications for this position will be taken into account in the evaluation process.

 The tenure track is open to talented individuals who have excellent potential for a scientific career. On the basis of their experience and competence, successful applicants will be placed specifically on either the  tenure track level of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The full professor positions are permanent positions.


Throughout their careers, those under the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher education, to follow the advances of their field and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. Individuals placed on the Aalto University tenure track for professors have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty.

Aalto University follows the new salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA

The Department of Media is an academic community of approximately 500 students and 80 staff members created through a restructuring of the School of Art and Design in January 2010. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The study programmes and research of the department are organized within three units; the Media Lab, Graphic Design and Photography.


Within the Graphic Design unit the successful candidate will be expected


–        to start and lead the development of the research program in Graphic Design and Visual Communication

–        to plan, develop and coordinate related education within the department at both Masters and Doctoral levels

–        to lead the unit’s doctoral research and studies

–        to initiate and manage development of the unit’s research strategy and to coordinate this within the Department of Media

In general, the Department of Media offers an interesting research community with good potential and resources for initiating research within the broad field of Graphic Design.

The person chosen for the tenure track position is expected to become closely linked to the educational development of MA studies within the unit.

Graphic Design has a long history over a broad field of professional activities and, at this point in time, we are now challenged by perhaps the most dramatic changes in the history of the field, brought about by new, far-reaching technological developments.

According to the School’s motto, Pro Arte Utili, it is expected that the successful candidate will have broad theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in order to work successfully within its art and design-based academic community. The position requires a doctoral degree, as well as multi-disciplinary education and design skills relevant and necessary for the development and understanding of the field of Graphic Design.

  *   a list of publications, designs, productions (the most important ones to be marked with an asterisk) and a brief overview of your ideas regarding the future development of the field
  *   a description of current research interests, and tentative research proposal
