Dear Mike,
My colleagues in the School of Art, Architecture and Design have redesigned
several of their programs to reflect a broadening of the scope of the
various professions that they are responsible for transitioning students
into; such as, Graphic Illustration is now 'Visual Communication Design',
and Industrial Design is now 'Product Innovation'.
I am not sure how much of this really has to do with 'getting rid of the old
vocational silos' though. I think it has more to do with an inherent desire
to freshen the curriculum and to more accurately reflect to the world
(including potential students) what they believe they are actually teaching
students to be and do. The 'old' vocations are still there, its just that
the skills, knowledge and critical aptitude that is required from our
students in order to respond to pressing global challenges, such as climate
change etc., are effecting a gradual‹but definitive‹shift in the
construction of the silo itself. In other words, I don't think its just
superficial re-branding, I think it reflects a shift in the nature of what
advocacy roles academe and practice alike believe future students will be
required to perform within various mutations of the silo archetype.
You can refer to more detail on the change in nomenclature in the School of
Art, Architecture and Design here:

Subject: innovative curriculum design: getting rid of the old vocational
silos
I would be interested to know of any institutions which have recently
re-designed their curriculums driven by a desire to get rid of the
old vocational terms such as graphic design, illustration etc.
