medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear George,
You might have a look at late 14th-century depictions of hell in Italian
wall paintings, such as those in the church at San Gimignano where the
damned are all conveniently labelled. The labelling, in fact, points
out a distinctive trend in late medieval Last Judgement scenes,
particularly in Italy, in which "crimes" increasingly take the place of
"sins" per se.
Cheers,
Jim
