SCREEN INDUSTRIES SEMINARS: Specialty Cinema Exhibition in the UK
Jason Wood
Director of Programming, Curzon Cinemas
2pm Wednesday 23 March 2011
Room 0.22
St. George’s Building
141 High Street, Portsmouth PO1 2HY
Arthouse, or what the industry today refers to as ‘specialised’, film, represents a well established but niche sector of the film market in Britain. Specialised film covers several categories, including foreign-language imports, films with unconventional narratives or challenging subject matter, documentaries, and re-released classics. In this talk, Jason Wood will provide an overview of the specialised/arthouse sector. In particular he will focus on the importance of exhibition and distribution, discussing the prominent role that Curzon Cinemas and its sister company Artificial Eye plays in this area. As well as giving a brief overview of the two companies and his role within them, Jason will also explain the current state of the UK market for specialised/arthouse film, looking at relevant changes, the challenges faced, and presenting an account of which specialised films get released in the U.K. and why. As part of this account, he will be looking at the role of major film festivals, how marketing and advertising works, the role of U.K. critics, and the responsibility audiences must accept in terms of ensuring that there is a culturally diverse film landscape in this country.
Jason Wood is Director of Programming for Curzon Cinemas, one of the U.K's most successful independent exhibitors. He is also an acquisitions advisor for Curzon's sister company Artificial Eye, the U.K's foremost arthouse distributor. A regular contributor to numerous film periodicals including Little White Lies and Sight and Sound, Jason is the author of books on American Independent Cinema (BFI, 2004), Road Movies (BFI, 2007), Contemporary Mexican Cinema (Faber and Faber, 2006) and Nick Broomfield (Faber and Faber, 2005). Currently he is writing monographs on Nicolas Roeg and Claire Denis.
