The American Popular Culture Network, FASS and the Institute for the Study
of the Americas, cordially invite you to an evening with Todd Gitlin on 5
May 2011 at the Institute for the Study of the Americas, Senate House
(South Side), Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU. Professor Gitlin’s talk will
be in room 103 and will start at 6pm.
Todd Gitlin is currently professor of journalism and sociology and chair
of the PhD program in Communications at Columbia University, New York.
He has authored fourteen books, including, The Intellectuals and the Flag;
Letters to a Young Activist; Media Unlimited: How the Torrent of Images
and Sounds Overwhelms Our Lives; The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why
America Is Wracked by Culture Wars; The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of
Rage; Inside Prime Time and The Whole World Is Watching. He was president
of Students for a Democratic Society in the early 1960s, and helped
organise the first national demonstration against the Vietnam War in the
USA. He has written widely for the underground press and has been a member
of the Board of Directors of Greenpeace USA.

MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. Membership is open to all who teach and research these subjects in HE institutions, via either institutional or individual membership. The field includes film and TV production, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, publishing, interactive media and the web; and it includes higher education for media practice as well as for media studies.
