Hello all,
I would guess that most of us in one way or another count (?) beauty as a criterion when talking about movies, sometimes it can be problematic...did Bertolucci deliberately evoke the beautiful in 'Il Conformista' in order to make us uncomfortable with this category, is it transcendent? I doubt it but it can be troubling. The beautiful is seductive, is it not? Is it seduction that we seek to avoid? I for instance find the image (this is the right term in this context) of Laura Linney beautiful, is this the same as the sense of beauty I have when the camera swoops upward with the blown autumn leaves in Clerici's garden in the Bertolucci film?
I wonder if we need to invoke categories from Lacan's conceptualistion of the Imaginary and the Symbolic? Is there a case of 'trans-coding'?
Lots of questions.
Peace
Alan
