medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear George
There has been quite a lot of work done on the treachery of Ganelon - one
of the traitors in Dante's Hell. Most of what come immediately to mind is
quite old - Bloch's Medieval French Literature and the Law, or marianne
Camer Vos in Olifant 2 but they would be starting places. the
concentration has been on Ganelon's crime - but Roger Pensom in 'Literary
Technique in the chansn de Roland' does, if I rmember correctly, discuss
the question of Ganelon losing his salvation. Interesting Ganelon's
gruesome punishment is one of the most frequently illustrated elements of
the Roland story
