In addition to Holman's Amphibian and Reptiles book, you should look at his 2000 book, Fossil Snakes of North America: Origin, Evolution, Distribution, Paleoecology (Indiana University Press). You can read a chunk of it through Google Books.
Another good reference is:
Walker, Karen J. 2003 An Illustrated Guide to Trunk Vertebrae of Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) and Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) in Florida. In Zooarchaeology: Papers to Honor Elizabeth S. Wing. F. Wayne King and Charlotte M. Porter, eds. Bulletin of the Florida Museum of Natural History 44:91-100.

To parallel Angelos' request, does anyone know of a good reference, with good figures, for identifying Holocene and Recent snake skeletal material from North America? I have Holman's Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles of North America, and several papers he authored/co-authored. Still need something more.
Many thanks,
Cinda
