Parsons The New School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks applicants for two post-doctoral fellow positions in Design Studies within the School of Art & Design History and Theory.
Applicants should demonstrate expertise in design studies with particular interest in design ethics, design futures and design activism, and/or in the history and theory of sustainability in design. The successful candidate will have an earned PhD degree or ABD near completion, and will demonstrate an interest in and commitment to further research and teaching pertinent to the development of the field of Design Studies.
The locus of this position will be in the School of Art & Design History and Theory, whose full and part time faculty are engaged academically while remaining active in their professional fields of practice. The School of Art & Design History and Theory currently offers the following degrees and programs.
- MA in the History of Decorative Arts and Design (in collaboration with the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum)
- MA Fashion Studies
- MA Design Studies (commencing in fall 2011, subject to accreditation)
- The School also offers over 150 required and elective courses annually to BFA and MFA students and to the wider university community.
- The School is working towards offering PhD programs.

Teaching Responsibilities:
The Post-Doctoral Fellows will teach up to four courses or the equivalent during the academic year, at either graduate or undergraduate level, and be involved, under the supervision the of full-time faculty, in research-based tasks.
Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have:
- A completed PhD or ABD near completion in a topic relevant to Design Studies
- Demonstrated teaching experience at university level;
- Commitment to research and scholarship towards developing serious critical, historical, and theoretical discussions in Design Studies, defined as an interdisciplinary field;
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with faculty and students;
- Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
