As part of the 2011 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies
and Systems (CTS 2011) http://cts2011.cisedu.info
Dates: May 23 – 27, 2011
The Sheraton University City Hotel, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Submission Deadline: January 21, 2011
The 2011 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems
(CTS 2011) is targeted “to address, explore and exchange information on the
state-of-the-art in collaboration enterprises, their modeling and
simulation, design and use, applications, and their impact.”

The 2011 International Workshop on Collaboration: Human-Centered Issues &
Interactivity Design (CHCI&ID 2011) focuses specifically on the
human-centered issues connected to collaboration technologies and systems.
We are especially interested in the contexts of how human-computer
interaction (HCI) and interactivity design are implicated in collaboration.
The human-centered issues include the social implications of technologies
and systems for collaboration, the sustainability implications, ethics,
privacy, diversity and social inclusion, health, and other concerns at the
nexus of human collaboration needs and practices and the mediation of
collaborations by technologies and systems.

Designers are not users, and they should not design for themselves, but for
the users. What if a designer could be and experience more like a user?
Would it automatically improve the quality of their designs as they could
design for themselves?

Be bold. Play strategically. Think emotionally. Unite unexpectedly.

Join us in an exploratory two-day engagement with politics in and around
Vancouver. Come with an open mind, fertile imagination and willingness to
collaborate. Leave with new perspectives, synergies with grassroots
movements and invigorated research ideas.

This is a hands-on workshop. We will not be reading papers all day. We will
not be huddled in a dark hotel room. We will not marvel at each others’
fancy new slides. It’s time for HCI practitioners to open a real and healthy
dialogue with grassroots communities and political themes. Help us initiate
this vital new research direction.

AIEDAM Special Issue, Spring 2013, Vol.27, No.2 – Studying and Supporting
Design Communication
Edited by: Maaike Kleinsmann & Anja Maier

Communication is an essential part of any design process, and problems in
design communication can lead to delays, mistakes and even the ultimate
failure of projects. Design communication is a multifaceted and complex
phenomenon to study. It is about products and services that may or may not
yet exist and includes abstraction to possible future situations.
Communication can be formal or informal. It can, for example, happen at the
same time (synchronously) or at different times (asynchronously) and it has
different directions, such as from manager to designer (top-down), from
designer to manager (bottom-up), between designers, and between designers
and the users. Transmitted information can take many different forms. It can
be spoken, written or drawn and can be sent and received using different
media. Further, a designer might work alone. More likely, however, the
design process is executed in large teams with members from differing
backgrounds.

School Design Futures – Seminar 3

Creating a school, changing a school, building a school: the possibilities
for dialogue.
Drawing on therapeutic community experience
2 & 3 February 2011
Planned Environment Therapy Trust, Church Lane, Toddington, Cheltenham

This will be an innovative seminar, the third in our series: School Design
Futures. It brings together those who work in therapeutic communities with
teachers, teachers of special needs education, lecturers of education for
sustainability, students and architects of sustainable schools, to explore
the role of dialogue in designing sustainable schools and therapeutic
communities.

The series is supported by the UK Energy Research Council; The Meeting
Place, Oxford; the Institute for the History and Work of Therapeutic
Environments; and the Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research
Centre at the University of Loughborough. The intention of this residential
seminar is to allow participants to experience at first hand, in the
beautiful and welcoming environment of the Planned Environment Therapy
Trust’s Archive and Study Centre which is devoted to therapeutic communities
and the base for the Institute for the History and Work of Therapeutic
Environments, the relationships between methods in therapeutic practice,
education for sustainability and approaches to user engagement in
sustainable design.

It will look in detail at the process of engaging clients and users in
design. There will be a mix of presentations and discussion sessions that
will use approaches that come from both user participation in design and
therapeutic communities to encourage dialogue between all.

These sessions will be facilitated by Teresa von Sommaruga Howard, a
practising architect and large group conductor to encourage broad discussion
and to explore the personal, practical, political and research issues raised
by participants during this, and the previous first and second seminars.
Themes for dialogue may include emerging issues of alternative education, of
education for sustainability, the demise of the Building Schools for the
Future programme and involving those with special needs in consultation
processes or evaluation of sustainable schools. Themes, issues, and possible
courses of action crystallised during this seminar will inform the fourth
and final Seminar of the School Design Futures Series, and the subsequent
publications.

For further details please contact Dr Andrea Wheeler, Research Associate,
The University of Loughborough at [log in to unmask] or 01509 222891

The seminar fee of £100 includes all meals and accommodation for the evening
of the 2nd February. There will be an opportunity for poster presentations
from architects, students and researchers.

Where is design practice at today?

In a debate dominated by methodological discourse, the role and importance
of design practice is often overlooked. This interdisciplinary forum gives
you and other members of the international design community the opportunity
to invigorate the design discourse by sharing ways that design practice is
being carried out, advanced and used to produce effective results.

DECEMBER 8, 2010

Dates: May 8, 2011- Vancouver, BC
Website:
http://www.jamesjpierce.com/CHI-2011/everyday-practice-and-sustainable-HCI.html

Everyday contexts and practices have emerged as key areas of focus
for sustainable HCI, since everyday life is a critical site for the
exchange, transformation, consumption and disposal of material resources
implicated in issues around sustainability. Everyday life not only is a
point of intervention for sustainable HCI, but also raises issues concerning
how HCI can and should approach sustainability, such as who is in charge of
deciding what ‘sustainability’ is, which cultural practices are drawn on in
framing sustainability, and the ethical implications of different
design interventions. This workshop will investigate how descriptions and
theories of everyday practice can be employed in order to critically and
