Dear Suchitra,
I think the best you could get is the book organised by Gui Bonsiepe
and Silvia Fernández /Historia del Diseño en AmericaLatina y el Caribe/,
São Paulo: Blucher, 2008. Its content relates the history of design in
different Latin American and Caribean (Cuba) countries.
The problem is the book is written in Spanish.
I would recommend you also the studies on latin-american
industrialization, specially those from Cepal, whose pioneer was Raul
Prebisch. Brazilian Celso Furtado is a very important theorist of this
issue. I think you can find their texts in English. They establish
important theoretical points of view on the relationship
center/periphery, domination/subordination. Their theses are the same
as Gui Bonsiepe's which Techology of Technology and others are
available in different languages.
all the best
