CILIP Prison Libraries Group (PrLG) committee member Sibylla Parkhill has kindly agreed to host a visit to her place of work at HMP & YOI Bronzefield on February 3rd 2011 at 2pm. HMP & YOI Bronzefield is a private women’s prison and is contracted to Sodexo Justice Services. The library is not part of the local authority libraries and is run and owned wholly by the prison.
The visit will probably take about 2-2.5 hours in total and will involve a brief tour of the prison, a look at the prison library and an informal talk about the collection and how it all works. Finally there will be an opportunity for refreshments and for visitors to ask questions and discuss the visit. Visitors should bear in mind that the necessary security checks that involve being searched, showing ID and handing over property will take a short period of time too.
There is no charge for those wishing to attend.
Location and travel information:
Bronzefield is situated in Ashford, Surrey, just outside of London:

Date and time of visit:
Thursday 3rd February. The visit will begin at 2pm.
Who can attend:
A maximum of 10 visitors will be able to visit the prison and library.
The visit may be of use to those currently working toward Chartership and looking for evidence of a wider appreciation of the profession to add to their portfolio. The visit should also provide a brief but useful introduction to prison libraries for those curious about working in the sector in the future.
Priority will be given to CILIP members.
Registering to attend:
To register interest in this visit, email [log in to unmask] and I will provide the various documents you must complete along with further information.
Each visitor will have to complete and sign the first section of a PNC (Police National Computer Check) form and return it with a photocopy of their passport or photo driving licence. These will need to be returned before Thursday Jan 20th so the essential security clearance can be put in place prior to arrival.
