Hi, I'm just getting started evaulating study design and am experiencing difficulty categorizing a few physical therapy studies I have read.
In one study two groups of baseball players (Professsional level, collegiate level) are evaluated for General Joint Laxity (five joints measured- finger, wrist, elbow, knee, ankle), and Range of Motion of the shoulder (2nd Position, external rotation). The two groups' ROM test and laxity test results and are compared.
Is this simply a Descriptive qualitative series? Would you call this a case series?
The stated goal of the second study is to investigate the surface EMGs of the medial and lateral triceps in baseball players and non-baseball players.
21 males are divided into two groups. 9 participants have played baseball (test group) and the remaining 12 participants have no experince playing baseball (control group). In the test group, a 1kg weight is held with in 4 separate positions and surface EMGs are taken of the medial and lateral triceps, posterior deltoid and infraspinatus of both arms. In the non-player group the same measurements are taken, but only the dominant arm's surface EMG in the 4 positions. The EMGs are compared.
This trial seems qualitative( ? ) but designates a control. Would holding the 1kg weight be considered an intervention. The relationship between the EMG another factor is not mentioned. I'm baffled.
Is this a trial ?
Any hints on how to evaluted this study design?
