David,
We had a similar case just before Christmas, with a GP calling wanting serum etonogestrel (ENG) levels following a patient getting pregnant: the local hospital U/S department couldn't find the implant.
I had to speak to the Pharmaceutical company (previously Organon Os, now Merck). They advised me that the patient must be referred to a Specialist Referral Centre for U/S localisation of the implant, and only these Centres could order an ENG measurement, direct from Merck.
You will have to call Merck and they can advise where your nearest Centre is - I can't remember which department, but if you ask for the technical people dealing with this, you'll eventually get through. I also spoke to the Steroid Unit at King's and was advised there was no characteristic hormone pattern in my particular case - especially as the patient was pregnant!
I also refer you a 2006 paper in Contraception 73: 325-330 - Management and localization strategies for the nonpalpable Implanon rod.

Onderwerp: Missing Implanon
Our patient has a missing Implanon. Can a blood test be done for
etonogestrel? Is there a characteristic hormone pattern that would
indicate if it's still in place?
